Fire in Boracay burns out of control
BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, Philippines—Boracay Fire rages uncontrollable starting at approximately 8:20pm and burned vigorously for many hours with flames reaching almost 15 meters in height. The street ran wild with hundreds of people scattering about with local Filipinos in attempts to remove their property from neighbouring building or to spray down their roofs with water due to the hot ashes that filled the night sky like fireworks. The police attempted to hold back the crowd but was helpless against the push of onlooker and residence crowding the area. Equipment problems with the fire hose in the beginning of the blazed initiated a bucket brigade but this was helpless against the heat and flames.
Senior Inspector Rodolfo ueto, Boracay fire marshal, said 25 structures, mostly boarding houses in Sitio Ambulong in Barangay Manoc-Manoc were destroyed. FO1 Melvin Custodio suffered a cut in the hand while putting out the fire. Five residents also suffered cuts and other minor injuries in the incident. Cueto said the fire was believed to have originated near the kitchen in the second floor of the house owned by Melly Torres. He said they were still investigating whether the cause was an unattended candle or a short circuit in the electrical system because the fire occurred during the multiple power interruption Boracay Island was experiencing from its power source for the island.
Damage to property and personal belongings of boarders, mostly employees of resorts and hotels in Boracay, was estimated at P1.5 million.
